Universus Vol. II

This is our second installment of the Universus series, a four part compilation brought to you by Circuitree Records to highlight some of our favorite producers’ works. The series includes tracks from internationally recognized producers like Luke Vibert and Jimmy Edgar, Take, Caural, Dimlite, AK Kids (Akira Kiteshi), as well as Jacque Polynice, Kentsoundz, Sleepover, Panther God, and more. Featuring stunning artwork by Kent Hernandez of Madeira Projects, Universus is a veritable force of nature!

Volume II starts off with the silky smooth reworking of Sleepover’s classic “The Sun.” Jacque Polynice is known for his ultra refined downtempo gems, and this is no exception. He slows the original down a bit, finding his hop hop comfort zone, keeping the jazzy chords intact while cutting and splicing Miranda Rae’s vocals over his intricate percussive work. A professor in DSP science, Polynice brings the futuristic textures while keeping everything grooving at a steady pace, floating over manicured sub bass. Massive tune!

Track 2 is “Brokknee,” by Panther God. This tracks has gained the attention of numerous labels and fans alike, earning PG a reputation as a producer to watch for 2011 and beyond. A tightly knit assortment lasers, trunk rattling bass and vocal samples make for a clever take on the Dilla legacy, while pushing things further into space. Keep your ears peeled for more great tunes from this young producer!

Track 3 is one of our favorite RBTS WIN productions to date. A vocal centric affair between Javi Bolea and Brien Worsham, the two have created a unique hybrid of lo fi downtempo meets raggae here with Pom Pom Girls. It’s a love story involving conversations with god, that will keep you coming back to unravel the whole story.

AK KIDS come hard with “Albino Egg,” a real bruiser of a beat. Brain crushing drums and bass exit the gate like a bucking bronco to take you on a wild and dare we say it, “wonky” ride through beat land. Bangin’ yet melodic and bristling with detail, this is not something they made in an hour. You can hear the time and focus, the engineering brilliance! Zap! AK KIDS is the downtempo / wokny beats side project of Akira Kiteshi (Pinball) featuring his compadre Steven Hyslop!

The lead vocalist from Sleepover, Miranda Rae has been a busy song bird as of late, working with a various producers, on her forthcoming solo album. With “White Noise,” produced by the brilliant Peripheral, we get a sneak peak of her new batch of tunes, and what a refreshing and beautiful tune it is! This is a true romance between one of the best vocalists on the planet, and a silky smooth down tempo track that reminds one of early Mum productions. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a love song that tugs at the heart strings without sounding, well sappy. Thank the lord for that!

Finally, MIracle Cat’s reworking of TFPP’s “I Want to Smoke Your Hair” is quite the anomaly. First off, it’s creators are a husband and wife duo, Devin and Amy Smith, that croon and harmonize together with love in their hearts, secondly, they together sound like the equivalent of a musical twin of Bob Ladue, the singer of TFPP. It’s no surprise when one learns that Devin and Bob are super close friends and have worked together / remixed each other many times of the years. We love this tune and think of it as a modern take on Doo Wop, with a sexy modern twist!

Bonus Track!

It’s pretty hard to imagine Electronic music without Luke Vibert or Jimmy Edgar. The two extremely prolific producers teamed up for this one off collabo that is, well, a disco track! With funky bassline and grooving breakbeat in place, the synths glide and funk along, over crisp breakbeats and a sawtooth bass. This is an ode to Disco itself; one that leaves us wondering just how awesome a full length of collabos between the two maestros could be!
